Roller bunks change what a shallow ramp means for you. On carpeted bunks the boat has to float free before it will move, so at a ramp with a gentle grade you end up backing the truck's rear tires into the water to get deep enough. Rollers let the boat break loose and move with far less water under it — which is the difference between launching comfortably and dunking your hubs every trip.

This CE Smith pair covers 5 feet of support per side. Rollers are also the easier system for anyone loading solo: the boat can be winched up under control rather than needing to be powered on, and it releases on launch with a push instead of a shove.

The tradeoff to know going in is that rollers concentrate support at points rather than spreading it along a face. That's fine for launching and retrieving, but for long-term off-season storage on the trailer, carpeted bunks are gentler on pontoon tubes.
